Our 1st Challenge

Since each of our work
will be posted on a page,
I think we should start off with something
that tells a little bit about ourselves.
Keep in mind,
it can take any form and does not have to be a poem.

All About Me

All about me......
I believe in a higher power,
I always try to give more than I take
From the world,
And the people I proudly call my friends.
I show respect and I insist on being respected.
I live each day being as truthful as I can be,
Without using the truth to inflict pain.
I would rather have you slap me,
Than to have you lie to me.
I write down my feelings and my thoughts,
Yet, I do not think I am truly a poet,
Or a vessel of folklore although I hope to be.
I am sane with a touch of playful insanity,
A bottomless pit of desire,
An urgency to learn more about the world,
A yearning to be loved and to give love,
A heart that bleeds when it's been neglected.
I am a woman full of enthusiasm,
Full of inner strength,
In my glory when I can nurture,
In a pit of darkness when I've been spurned.
I am more likely to smile than to frown.
I know that life will have ups and downs.
I am always prepared for the worst in any situation,
Yet, highly grateful for the best that comes my way.
I am......human.

Challenge Prompt - The WHERE I'M FROM

I am from the mountains, the coal mines,
and a little country church,

I am from a coal company house, wooden slats bare of paint,
filled with black dust,

I am from Rhododendron, white Roses and daisies,

I am from Doles' and McDaniel's,

Granny Leila and Gramma Mack,
hard working and strong, determined yet accepting,
full of love,

I am from a new generation that cannot move forward
without learning from the past,
a heritage handed down with secrets and claims,

I am from "You can be anything if you work hard"
and "God forgives those who ask forgiveness"

I am from home churned butter,
undershirts worn from October until May
and Vicks Vapor Rub that could cure anything

I am from Black Gold country,
filled with biscuits and gravy, taters and ramps

I am from great-grandparents who planted tobacco,
grandparents who survived the Depression
and parents who wanted a better life

I am from the scent of my grandmother's kitchen,
the worn bible she carried,
the sound of music and laughter
that permeated the walls of our home.

I am from the universe,
to serve a purpose,
fill a need,
hold a hand,
break a heart,
mend wounds,
teach life's lessons and carry on for generations yet to come.

Prompt & Response - August 2007

What piece of advice would you offer to other writers,
especially those afraid to put their feelings into words?

What do you consider to be your greatest asset as a writer?
Your greatest liability?

Who do you admire the most in the world of writing?

How does, or did, this person inspire you?

----------

I Am A Writer

I am a writer, if only in my own mind,
I share my thoughts and my heart,
I write about the things I hold dear,
Or the things that tear my world apart.

If I had to give a new writer advice,
It would be to write down everything,
Don't worry about the meter or the rhyme,
Just let the feelings in your heart sing.

I've done a lot of living and I've grown,
Each adventure led me to a new place,
I've learned how to touch a heart,
How to bring tears of joy to a lonely face.

I used to think of writers as famous people,
Stephen King, Erma Bombeck and others,
Without realizing they were just like me,
All sons, daughters, sisters and brothers.

Every poet, every master of prose,
Has inspired me to write what I think,
Someone out there will relate to my words,
While many may feel they only stink.

I am a writer, if only in my own mind,
I will never please everyone and I don't try,
I simply strive to free my heart and soul,
Until my emotions and desire runs dry.
