In The Darkness

Don't you know
I couldn't tell you
how much I needed
to be with you tonight?
How much
I would need you
in the darkness
to be holdin' me tight?

I knew
by your hesitation
as you set a date
for Friday eve
that you
already had plans
with someone else
in whom's arms you'd cleave.

How could you
possibly not know
nor hear it
in my voice?
Not know
I asked to see you
out of need
not because of choice?

I knew
by your elusiveness
and by
the ringin' o' the phone
darkness would not
be spent in your arms
once again
it would be spent alone.
